It will help you stay connected to people you care about.

It will help you see a new side of your friends.

It will introduce you to new friends.

It is faster than text-messaging.

It will make you think about your life.

It will help you keep up with what people are talking about.

It can create traffic for your blog or Website.

It requires a very small investment.

It can help build your personal “brand.”

It is fun! Twitter is just plain entertaining.

-Beginners start here. Read the first 25%, after that it becomes a list instead of a how-to guide.

This blog post has a rather great collection of resources for all-things twitter, though for beginners I would recommend reading only the first 25% or so.

The intro area is great because it walks you through signing up, selecting a username, changing your profile design and avatar, etc. After that it compiles a giant list of tools and services on twitter which might be good for some people.

I highly recommend the intro to brand new users and the entire thing for more veteran users.
